The MAC Sports Club is based in Flaxmere where 95% of its players and supporters reside. The club is an old and well respected premier rugby team that has a huge history in Hawkes Bay, supported by players like George Nepia (a member of the original Invincibles), Tori Read and Everad Jackson. In recent years, it has moved into a whanau based organisation encompassing a range of sports and family activities. They are a prime example of an organisation/club with stong family values and commitment to their community. MAC is also the first non-alcohol club in New Zealand.
In the past, the club has struggled against better funded teams but with much time and effort put in by Henare O’Keefe, Taine Randell, and Pat Benson, the club has had a tremendous turnaround.
U-Turn supports the activities of the MAC Sports Association which we believe to be a vital part of the ‘winning’ Flaxmere spirit. Players are told that they don’t just play for themselves but for the dreams and aspirations of the whole suburb of Flaxmere. U-Turn has also found sponsors for the teams new jerseys and Unison have sponsored training shirts along with committing their support to the junior club.
U-Turn wants to see more kids playing sport in Flaxmere so has focused on the junior rugby club with a target to have 400 kids playing junior rugby in Flaxmere within 3 years. Every year we seek funding to purchase balls, gear bags and training gear plus named rugby jerseys to keep. U-Turn believes it important that the jerseys are owned by the children as not only does it support a sense of pride to be part of a team but the wearing of MAC colours is helping to ‘change the colours of Flaxmere,’ that is to reduce the presence of gang colours, especially on children.
